Why Christians Should Not Charge Interest to Fellow Believers

A Biblical Call to Kingdom-Minded Generosity

In today’s financial world, interest is so common that many barely notice it—mortgages, credit cards, car loans, business loans—it’s the standard. But God’s Word calls His people to a radically different way of relating to one another when it comes to lending. For Christians, lending to other believers is not meant to be a profit opportunity, but an act of service, love, and obedience to Christ.

The Biblical Foundation

Scripture is clear on this point: God’s people are to avoid charging interest to one another.

  • Exodus 22:25“If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.”
  • Leviticus 25:35–37“If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you. You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit.”
  • Deuteronomy 23:19–20“Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest.”
  • Psalm 15:5 describes a righteous person as one “who lends money to the poor without interest.”

In the early church, lending without interest was a natural expression of the generosity Jesus modeled. The goal was not financial gain, but meeting needs so that the Body of Christ could flourish.

The Heart Behind It

When a Christian lends to another Christian without interest, it is an act of trust in God’s provision and an investment in eternal rewards. Jesus tells us in Luke 6:35 – “But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High.”

An interest-free loan is a way to live out the principle that all we have belongs to God. We are simply stewards of His resources, called to use them for Kingdom purposes.

A Present Need at Aslan Health

At Aslan Health, our mission is to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and demonstrate His love by providing affordable, quality healthcare for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the underserved.

Right now, we have an opportunity for a believer to bless this ministry in a significant way. Our clinic property is under a contract for deed with a current balance of about $335,000 at 6% interest. In about three years, we face a balloon payment of $276,000.

If a Christian brother or sister were to provide an interest-free loan to pay off this balance, the savings in interest would be substantial—freeing tens of thousands of dollars that could instead go directly toward patient care, outreach, and ministry. Every dollar saved from interest is a dollar that can be used to serve the uninsured, share the Gospel, and remove barriers to health in our community.

Why This Matters for the Kingdom

By extending an interest-free loan to Aslan Health, you wouldn’t just be offering financial relief—you’d be actively partnering in a Kingdom mission:

  • Advancing the Gospel through every patient encounter.
  • Providing care for the least of these (Matthew 25:40) regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.
  • Freeing resources currently bound to interest payments so they can be redirected toward healing, hope, and discipleship.

A Call to Action

If God has blessed you with the means to lend without interest, we invite you to prayerfully consider partnering with us in this way. You could be the answer to a prayer we’ve been lifting for months—that God would provide the resources to remove this debt burden and free us to invest fully in the mission He’s given us.
