Welcoming the Stranger: A Faith-Centered Approach to Compassionate Healthcare

Welcoming the Stranger: A Faith-Centered Approach to Care in a Divided Time

In today’s climate, conversations about immigration can quickly become heated, political, and polarizing. Headlines and soundbites often reduce complex human lives into abstract debates. Yet for healthcare providers—and especially for faith-based clinics like Aslan Health—these conversations are not theoretical. They are deeply personal.

Every day, we care for people who are working hard, raising families, and trying to stay healthy in a system that can be difficult to navigate. Some of our neighbors face additional barriers because they are new to our community, unfamiliar with the healthcare system, or unsure where it is safe to seek care. These realities call us to respond thoughtfully, compassionately, and faithfully.

A Biblical Lens, Not a Political One

In Welcoming the Stranger, authors Matthew Soerens and Jenny Yang invite Christians to step back from political talking points and instead view immigration—and by extension, care for the vulnerable—through a biblical lens.

Rather than asking, “What policy should win?” the better question becomes, “How does God call His people to treat others?”

Scripture speaks clearly and consistently:

“Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.”
Exodus 23:9

God’s command to care for the foreigner is not a side note—it is woven throughout Scripture:

  • “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:34)
  • “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you.” (Deuteronomy 10:18–19)
  • “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers.” (Hebrews 13:2)

These passages remind us that behind every label is a person made in the image of God—worthy of dignity, compassion, and care.

We Are Strangers Too

Scripture also reminds us of a deeper truth that reshapes how Christians see the world: we are strangers ourselves.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.”
1 Peter 2:11

As followers of Christ, our ultimate citizenship is not tied to geography or borders.

“Our citizenship is in heaven.”
Philippians 3:20

This perspective humbles us. We are temporary residents here—sojourners passing through—called to reflect the values of God’s Kingdom while we live on this earth. When we care for those who feel out of place, unseen, or uncertain, we are living out the Gospel we claim to believe.

Healthcare Should Be a Safe Place

For many people—especially those navigating language barriers, limited resources, or unfamiliar systems—healthcare can feel intimidating. Fear of cost, confusion about eligibility, or concern about being turned away often delays care until problems become more serious.

At Aslan Health, we believe healthcare should be a place of refuge, not fear.

Clear pricing, transparent policies, and respectful care help people seek help earlier—before small problems become emergencies. This approach not only improves individual health outcomes but strengthens the health of the entire community by reducing preventable complications and unnecessary emergency care.

Compassion and Order Can Coexist

One of the strengths of Welcoming the Stranger is its acknowledgment that compassion and order are not opposites. Scripture affirms the role of laws and governing authorities, while also calling God’s people to radical love, mercy, and hospitality.

For healthcare providers, this means:

  • Treating every patient with dignity and respect
  • Focusing on medical need, not background or circumstance
  • Removing unnecessary barriers to basic care
  • Offering clarity and honesty without judgment

This posture allows clinics to serve faithfully without becoming political actors.

Caring for Our Neighbors—All of Them

Aslan Health’s mission is simple and deeply rooted in faith: Caring for our neighbors.
Not some neighbors. Not only the easy ones. All of them.

Jesus consistently crossed cultural, social, and religious boundaries to bring healing and hope. In Matthew 25, He reminds us that when we care for the hungry, the sick, and the stranger, we are serving Him.

Healthcare is one of the most tangible ways to live out that calling.

Moving Forward with Grace

The national conversation around immigration is unlikely to become quieter or simpler anytime soon. But our calling remains steady.

By choosing compassion over fear, listening over labeling, and care over controversy, we can reflect Christ’s love in tangible ways—one patient, one conversation, one act of kindness at a time.

At Aslan Health, we remain committed to providing affordable, respectful, whole-person care to our community—grounded in faith and guided by love. In doing so, we trust that God will use small acts of faithfulness to bring healing far beyond our clinic walls.
