When it comes to sexual health, certain infections are well-known—like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes. However, others often fly under the radar, despite their potential impact on health. One such organism is Ureaplasma. At Aslan Health, we believe in educating our community about all aspects of sexual health so you can make informed decisions and seek timely care.
What is Ureaplasma?
Ureaplasma is a type of bacteria that belongs to the Mycoplasma family. Unlike most bacteria, Ureaplasma lacks a typical cell wall, making it more difficult to detect and treat with standard antibiotics. It’s naturally present in many people’s urogenital tract without causing any harm. However, under certain conditions, it can multiply and cause infections.
There are two main types:
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Ureaplasma parvum
These bacteria can be transmitted through sexual contact or even from mother to child during childbirth.
Who is at Risk?
Anyone can carry Ureaplasma, but certain factors may increase the risk:
- Being sexually active with multiple partners
- A weakened immune system
- Existing sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Use of invasive devices like catheters
Symptoms of Ureaplasma Infection
One of the reasons Ureaplasma often goes undiagnosed is because it doesn’t always cause symptoms. However, when it does, symptoms may include:
In Women:
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain
- Burning sensation during urination
- Pain during intercourse
- Vaginal irritation
In Men:
- Urethral discharge
- Painful urination
- Testicular discomfort or swelling
If left untreated, Ureaplasma may contribute to more serious conditions:
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Infertility
- Pregnancy complications such as premature birth or low birth weight
Diagnosis
Because Ureaplasma doesn’t always cause noticeable symptoms, diagnosis usually requires specific testing. At Aslan Health, we can test for Ureaplasma through a urine sample, cervical swab, or urethral swab.
We may recommend testing if:
- You have unexplained urogenital symptoms
- You’ve had recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- You have fertility issues
- Your partner has been diagnosed with Ureaplasma or other STIs
Treatment Options
Treating Ureaplasma isn’t as simple as treating many other bacterial infections because of its unique structure. Common antibiotics such as penicillin won’t work. Instead, it typically requires:
- Doxycycline
- Azithromycin
- Erythromycin
- Occasionally, fluoroquinolones
Treatment length varies, usually ranging from 7 to 14 days. In some cases, both sexual partners need treatment to prevent reinfection.
Complications if Left Untreated
If ignored, Ureaplasma may contribute to:
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Infertility in both men and women
- Pregnancy risks (preterm labor, miscarriage, infection of the amniotic sac)
- Potential complications with IVF or IUI fertility treatments
Common Myths About Ureaplasma
Myth 1: It’s always an STI.
While it can be sexually transmitted, Ureaplasma can also be part of your natural flora and may not always come from sexual contact.
Myth 2: If you have no symptoms, you don’t need treatment.
In some cases, asymptomatic Ureaplasma can lead to serious reproductive or pregnancy issues later on.
Myth 3: It’s rare.
Ureaplasma is common, particularly among sexually active individuals. Many people carry it without knowing.
Myth 4: Only women need to worry about it.
Men can carry and transmit Ureaplasma too. It can also lead to prostatitis, urethritis, or fertility problems in men.
