Strep throat is a common but potentially serious infection that affects people of all ages. At Aslan Health, we want to help you recognize the signs, understand treatment options, and learn how to prevent spreading the illness to others.
What Is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Unlike the common cold, which is viral, strep throat requires medical attention and treatment with antibiotics. Without proper care, strep throat can lead to complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, or ear and sinus infections.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms usually appear quickly and can vary in severity. They may include:
- Sudden sore throat and pain when swallowing
- Red, swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus)
- Fever and chills
- Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
- Headache, stomachache, or nausea (more common in children)
It’s important to note that a sore throat without cough, runny nose, or congestion is more likely to be strep.
How Is Strep Throat Diagnosed?
Since other illnesses can cause a sore throat, diagnosis is key. A healthcare provider will usually do a rapid strep test or a throat culture to confirm the presence of the bacteria.
Treatment and Recovery
If you are diagnosed with strep throat, antibiotics are the most effective treatment. They not only help you feel better sooner but also reduce the risk of complications and prevent spreading the infection. Most people start feeling better within 24–48 hours of beginning antibiotics.
Additional ways to ease symptoms include:
- Rest and plenty of fluids
- Warm salt water gargles
- Over-the-counter pain relievers (as recommended by your provider)
Preventing the Spread
Strep throat spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or sharing utensils. To protect yourself and others:
- Wash hands frequently
- Avoid sharing drinks, food, or utensils
- Stay home until you’ve been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours
When to Seek Care
If you or your child have a sore throat lasting more than a couple of days, a high fever, or difficulty swallowing, it’s time to see a healthcare provider. At Aslan Health, we can evaluate your symptoms, provide testing, and get you started on the right treatment.
✅ Quick Fact: A sore throat caused by strep usually improves within 2–3 days of starting antibiotics, but it’s important to finish the full prescription even if you feel better.
