“The Dwarfs Are for the Dwarfs”: When the Church Turns Inward

In The Last Battle, the final installment of The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis paints a sobering picture of a group of dwarfs who, after being manipulated and disillusioned, declare with stubborn pride: “The Dwarfs are for the Dwarfs.” This phrase becomes their rallying cry as they close themselves off from truth, from Aslan, and from anyone who tries to help them. They refuse to believe—even when they are standing in paradise—because they are too jaded, too self-focused, and too determined not to be “taken in.”

This haunting scene is not just a tale of fictional creatures—it’s a powerful mirror for the Church today.

A Closed Circle of Comfort

Too often, churches fall into the same trap. Hurt by the world, weary from battles, or simply caught in a comfortable rhythm, it becomes easy to declare—whether aloud or in attitude—“The Church is for the Church.”

Programs become inward-focused. Fellowship is limited to those already within the walls. Missions and outreach slip down the list of priorities. The Gospel—intended to bring light to dark places—is dimmed not by external persecution, but by internal self-protection.

Just like the dwarfs in The Last Battle, these churches believe they’re being wise or prudent. But in truth, they’re closing their eyes to the glory of God’s Kingdom—and the mission they were created for.

The Call to See Beyond the Stable

In the book, Aslan doesn’t give up on the dwarfs. He offers them truth, beauty, and a feast. But they refuse to see it. They sit in paradise yet remain convinced they’re still locked in a grim stable.

We see that same spiritual blindness in our world today—and even in the Church.

At Aslan Health, we hear the cries of the hurting every day. People come through our doors uninsured, unseen, and unsure where to turn. Many feel forgotten by the system. Some have been overlooked by the Church. But Christ hasn’t forgotten them—and neither will we.

We believe Jesus is still calling His Church to open its eyes. Through Scripture. Through the Holy Spirit. And yes, through the brokenness of the people right outside our doors.

From “What Do We Need?” to “Who Can We Serve?”

The Gospel doesn’t call us to circle the wagons. It calls us to go.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14
“God… gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” – 2 Corinthians 5:18
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:27

At Aslan Health, we are committed to being that light. Not just inside a clinic—but in schools, shelters, neighborhoods, and wherever the need is greatest. We serve because Christ first served us.

We invite the Church to join us—not just in word, but in action.

Don’t Be Like the Dwarfs

Let us not become like the dwarfs—cynical, small-minded, and huddled in false safety. Let us fix our eyes on Christ, open our hearts to the hurting, and extend the Gospel with boldness, compassion, and truth.

Because the Church is not for the Church.
The Church is for Christ—and for the world He came to save.
