Loneliness Is More Than a Feeling — It’s a Health Risk

Whole-person care means caring for body, mind, and soul.

Loneliness doesn’t just weigh on the heart — it affects the whole body. In fact, research shows that loneliness and social isolation can be just as harmful to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and even premature death.

At Aslan Health, we believe health is more than lab results and prescriptions. We care for the whole person — and that means recognizing the deep impact that connection (or lack of it) has on your well-being.

Why Loneliness Hurts Your Health

God created us for relationship — with Him and with each other. When those relationships are missing or broken, it doesn’t just cause emotional pain. It triggers physical stress in the body, including:

  • Higher inflammation levels
  • Weakened immune function
  • Poorer sleep
  • Increased blood pressure and cortisol
  • Higher risk of chronic illness

Signs of Loneliness

Loneliness can look different for everyone. Some signs include:

  • Feeling like no one truly knows you
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or church
  • Feeling exhausted by social interaction, but sad when alone
  • Difficulty sleeping or focusing

Even people surrounded by others — in a full house, church, or workplace — can still feel deeply alone.

Ways to Reduce Loneliness

You are not meant to carry life alone. Here are a few steps that can help:

  1. Reach Out — Call a friend, stop by a neighbor’s house, or ask someone to lunch after church.
  2. Serve Others — Volunteering at your church, school, or clinic like Aslan Health creates meaningful bonds.
  3. Join a Faith Community — Being part of a small group or Bible study brings spiritual and emotional support.
  4. Move Your Body with Others — Walk with a friend or join a group fitness class.
  5. Talk About It — It’s okay to admit you’re struggling. Speak with a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor.

If you need someone to talk to, we’re here to listen — and to help connect you with community support, including Christian counseling through our onsite partner, Camille Madsen, LLC.
