At Aslan Health, we believe true healing involves the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. That’s why we incorporate both Lifestyle Medicine and Functional Medicine into the care we provide. Though they are often mentioned together, these two approaches are distinct in focus and application. Understanding their differences can help you make informed decisions about your health—and see how these models align with our mission of Christ-centered care.
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle Medicine focuses on using healthy lifestyle habits as a prescription for prevention, treatment, and even reversal of chronic disease. It’s built on six core pillars:
- Whole-food, plant-predominant nutrition
- Regular physical activity
- Restorative sleep
- Stress management
- Avoidance of risky substances
- Positive social connections
At Aslan Health, we incorporate Lifestyle Medicine through programs like Lifestyle Rx, which helps patients build sustainable habits in community—with guidance from providers, cooking classes, and faith-based encouragement.
“Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” —1 Corinthians 10:31
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine goes deeper to ask why disease occurs. It aims to uncover the root cause of illness by addressing imbalances in the body’s biological systems—often using advanced lab testing, detailed health history reviews, and individualized treatment plans.
Functional Medicine often includes:
- Nutritional and genetic testing
- Gut health evaluations
- Detox support
- Hormonal and metabolic balancing
- Supplement guidance
- Personalized care plans
Our founding clinician, Rebecca White, CNP, practices Functional Medicine and uses it to support patients with complex, chronic conditions who haven’t found answers through conventional approaches.
“The body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…therefore honor God with your body.” —1 Corinthians 6:19-20
How Are They Different?
| Lifestyle Medicine | Functional Medicine |
| Emphasizes habit change and prevention | Emphasizes root cause investigation |
| Ideal for managing common chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension) | Ideal for complex, unexplained symptoms (e.g. fatigue, autoimmunity) |
| Based on broad public health research | Based on systems biology and individualized testing |
| Group and community-based programs | One-on-one personalized care |
| Low-tech and low-cost | May involve advanced labs and supplements |
How Do They Work Together?
The beauty is—they’re complementary. At Aslan Health, we don’t believe in choosing one or the other. Instead, we use the best of both to serve our patients. Lifestyle Medicine creates the foundation for lasting health. Functional Medicine allows us to dig deeper when needed.
Together, they reflect our belief that health is not just the absence of disease but a reflection of God’s design—restored through grace, truth, and wise stewardship of our bodies.
Why It Matters at Aslan Health
Many of the people we serve are struggling—not just with symptoms, but with discouragement, disconnection, and unmet spiritual needs. By using both Lifestyle and Functional Medicine, we provide compassionate, individualized care that heals more than just the physical. It supports mental health, renews hope, and opens doors to share the love of Christ.
Whether you’re trying to get off medications, seeking answers to stubborn symptoms, or just want to feel better in your day-to-day life—there is a path forward. Let’s walk it together.
