HPV and Your Health: What Everyone Needs to Know

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, and while most people never realize they have it, HPV can lead to serious health problems if left unchecked. Both men and women are affected by HPV, but its impact can look different—and understanding the risks is key to prevention.

HPV in Women: The Link to Cervical Cancer

Certain strains of HPV can cause changes in the cells of the cervix. If these changes aren’t caught early, they may develop into cervical cancer. Regular Pap tests (Pap smears) are the best way to detect these changes before cancer develops.

The HPV vaccine also protects against the most dangerous strains of the virus, offering powerful prevention when given in adolescence or young adulthood.

HPV in Men: A Hidden Risk

Even without symptoms, men can pass HPV to their partners. Vaccination is the best protection for men, lowering their cancer risk and reducing the spread of HPV overall.

How HPV Spreads

HPV is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact. Because symptoms are often absent, many people don’t know they are carrying the virus. That’s why prevention and regular screenings are essential for long-term health.

Prevention for All

The good news is that HPV-related cancers can often be prevented. Here’s how:

  • Get vaccinated – The HPV vaccine is recommended for both boys and girls starting at age 11–12, and can be given up to age 26 (sometimes up to age 45).
  • Stay up to date on screenings – Women should have regular Pap tests to catch cervical cell changes early.
  • Practice healthy choices – Avoid smoking, maintain a nutritious diet, and use protection during sexual activity.
