5 Warning Signs of Breast Cancer | Aslan Health Clinic

Early Detection Saves Lives — Here’s What to Look For

At Aslan Health, we believe that caring for the body is an act of stewardship — one that honors the life and health God has given us. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s an important reminder that early detection can save lives. Understanding the warning signs of breast cancer empowers you to take proactive steps in caring for your health and seeking help when something feels off.

1. A New Lump or Thickening in the Breast or Underarm

The most well-known sign of breast cancer is a new lump or area of thickened tissue. Not all lumps are cancerous, but any new or unusual change should be checked by a healthcare provider. Lumps caused by cancer are often hard, painless, and irregular in shape, but sometimes they can feel tender or soft — so don’t ignore any new sensation.

2. Changes in Breast Size or Shape

Pay attention if one breast suddenly looks larger, swollen, or misshapen. This can include dimpling, bulging, or a change in contour. These changes might occur without any noticeable lump but can still indicate something happening beneath the surface that needs evaluation.

3. Skin Changes or Irritation

Skin dimpling, puckering, redness, or a texture that resembles an orange peel (called “peau d’orange”) can be early signs of inflammatory breast cancer. Persistent itching, flaking, or thickened skin around the nipple area should also be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

4. Nipple Changes or Discharge

Any unexplained nipple discharge, especially if it’s bloody or occurs without squeezing, should be assessed. Changes in the position or appearance of the nipple — such as inversion (turning inward) or pain — can also be warning signs.

5. Persistent Pain or Discomfort

While breast pain is common and often linked to hormonal changes, pain that doesn’t go away or is localized to one area of the breast should not be ignored. Persistent tenderness, swelling, or burning sensations deserve medical attention.

Free Breast Cancer Screenings Through the Minnesota SAGE Program

At Aslan Health, we never want cost to stand in the way of life-saving care. That’s why we partner with the Minnesota SAGE Program, which provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings — including mammograms — for those who qualify.

The SAGE Program is available to women who:

  • Live in Minnesota
  • Are between the ages of 40 and 64
  • Have little or no health insurance
  • Meet income guidelines for eligibility

Our team can help you determine if you qualify and guide you through every step of the process. Screenings through the SAGE Program are completely confidential and performed with compassion and dignity — reflecting Aslan Health’s mission to care for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.
