Addressing Social Determinants of Health
The health of individuals is shaped by more than just biology—it is deeply influenced by social factors. These Social Determinants of Health include:
- Income and Employment: Many individuals in our community are uninsured or underinsured, making it difficult to afford healthcare.
- Transportation: A lack of reliable transportation means some patients can’t make it to healthcare appointments.
- Language and Cultural Barriers: For our Spanish-speaking population, language can be a barrier to receiving clear and effective medical advice.
- Education and Awareness: Lack of health education means many are unaware of the services available to them, or how to take preventive steps to protect their health.
At Aslan Health, we recognize these barriers and actively work to remove them through our services and outreach efforts.
Solutions from Aslan Health
Our approach to healthcare goes beyond just treatment. We actively seek ways to eliminate these barriers and ensure that no one in our community is left behind. Some of our initiatives include:
- Free and Low-Cost Services: For those without insurance or with limited financial resources, Aslan Health provides free or affordable medical care. This allows individuals to access preventive services, acute care, and chronic disease management without the burden of high medical bills.
- Walk-In Care and Accessible Scheduling: We know that transportation and scheduling challenges can prevent patients from seeing a doctor. That’s why Aslan Health offers walk-in care and limits scheduled appointments to the top of each hour to give patients flexibility and reduce wait times.
- Bilingual Support for the Spanish-Speaking Population: We serve a growing number of Spanish-speaking families who are new to the area and may be unfamiliar with the healthcare system. Our bilingual staff and volunteers help bridge the communication gap to ensure these families receive the care and information they need.
- Outreach Programs: Recently, we partnered with ISD 742 to provide 50 sports physicals for students who otherwise would not have been able to participate in school sports. By taking the care directly to the schools, we eliminated transportation barriers for families without reliable access to healthcare. We plan to expand this initiative to support students involved in winter sports as well.
