November Is Lung Cancer Awareness Month: Breathe Life Into Prevention and Hope
At Aslan Health, we believe caring for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—means caring about prevention and awareness, too. This November, we join with communities across Minnesota to observe Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight prevention, screening, and the importance of early detection.
Lung Cancer in Minnesota
Lung cancer is the second most common invasive cancer among both men and women in Minnesota—and tragically, it remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in our state.
Each year, about 3,800 Minnesotans are diagnosed with lung cancer, and in 2022, 2,079 lives were lost to the disease.
Early detection saves lives:
- When lung cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is 68%.
- When detected late, that rate drops to just 21%.
Yet, according to the Minnesota Department of Health, only 10% of eligible patients have been screened for lung cancer. That means too many people are missing the chance to find and treat it early.

The Power of Prevention: Quitting Tobacco
One of the most effective ways to prevent lung cancer is quitting smoking—but we know that’s not easy. Quitting takes courage, time, and a plan. The Great American Smokeout®, held on the third Thursday in November, offers a supportive opportunity to take that first step.
You don’t have to quit in one day—just start with your plan to quit. The American Cancer Society offers helpful tools and resources to guide you:

Empowered to Quit
The American Cancer Society’s Empowered to Quit program is an email-based resource designed to help people plan their “Quit Day,” build confidence, and find strength through community.

At Aslan Health, we encourage our patients to take that next step—because every breath is a gift. And as part of our Model of Healthy Living, caring for your body is an act of stewardship and faith. Quitting smoking not only protects your physical health, but it also honors the body God has given you to serve others and live fully.
Whole-Person Care: Body, Mind, and Spirit
Our approach to medical care is centered on whole-person wellness. Whether you’re managing a chronic condition or looking to take proactive steps for prevention, we are here to walk beside you with compassion and hope.

This month, let’s breathe life into awareness and action. If you or someone you love may be at risk for lung cancer—or if you’re ready to quit smoking—Aslan Health can help connect you to the resources and care you need.
