At Aslan Health, we are passionate about your whole health — and that includes protecting your skin, the body’s largest organ. Skin health is often overlooked, but it plays a vital role in your overall well-being. With skin cancer being the most common cancer in the United States, it’s essential to understand the risks and learn simple steps to prevent it.
Understanding Skin Cancer
Skin cancer develops when abnormal skin cells grow uncontrollably. The three most common types are:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common and least aggressive type.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Can spread if not treated early.
- Melanoma: The most dangerous form, as it can spread quickly to other parts of the body.
Early detection is critical. Most skin cancers can be successfully treated when found early.
Risk Factors for Skin Cancer
- Excessive sun exposure, especially without protection
- Tanning bed use
- Fair skin, freckles, or light hair
- A history of sunburns
- Family history of skin cancer
- A high number of moles
Even if you have darker skin, you’re still at risk—especially for certain types of skin cancer that may be harder to detect.
Easy Tips for Skin Cancer Prevention
1. Seek Shade:
Limit your time in direct sunlight, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV rays are strongest.
2. Wear Protective Clothing:
Long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses can help block harmful rays.
3. Apply Sunscreen Daily:
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
4. Avoid Tanning Beds:
They greatly increase your risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma.
5. Perform Regular Skin Self-Exams:
Check your skin monthly for new moles or changes to existing ones. Look for the ABCDE signs of melanoma:
- Asymmetry
- Border irregularity
- Color variation
- Diameter larger than a pencil eraser
- Evolving in size, shape, or color
If you spot anything suspicious, schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider right away.
