Pink Eye: What You Need to Know About This Common Eye Infection

If you or your child has ever woken up with red, itchy, watery eyes stuck shut with gunk—there’s a good chance it was pink eye.

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is one of the most common eye conditions we see at Aslan Health. While it’s often mild and treatable, it can be highly contagious and very uncomfortable. Let’s take a closer look at what causes pink eye, how to treat it, and when to seek care.

What Is Pink Eye?

Pink eye is an inflammation of the thin, clear tissue that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye (the conjunctiva). When the blood vessels in the conjunctiva become inflamed, they give the eye a reddish or pink appearance—hence the name.

Types and Causes

There are three main types of pink eye:

  • Viral Conjunctivitis
Often linked to a cold or upper respiratory infection. It’s very contagious and usually spreads through coughing, sneezing, or contact with contaminated surfaces.
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Caused by bacteria and often leads to more eye discharge. It spreads through direct contact and is also highly contagious. This type may require antibiotic eye drops or ointment.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis
Caused by allergens like pollen, pet dander, or dust. It’s not contagious and often affects both eyes, causing itching, tearing, and swelling.

Common Symptoms

  • Redness in one or both eyes
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Watery or thick, sticky discharge
  • Crusty eyelids (especially in the morning)
  • Feeling like something is stuck in the eye
  • Light sensitivity

Treatment and When to See a Provider

Some types of pink eye will clear up on their own, but others may need medication—especially bacterial infections.
